FORT WORTH, Texas

The fifth-ranked TCU men's tennis team kept its perfect record in tact Thursday afternoon by downing No. 49 SMU, 4-0, on the indoor courts at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Horned Frogs are now 9-0, tying the 1986 squad for the second-best start in school history. TCU's best start came in 1981 with an 11-0 slate. The Mustangs dropped to 5-6 on the year and suffered their fourth consecutive loss to the Frogs.

Some heated competition highlighted the doubles as rain pelted the roof and thunder rattled the walls. After trading serves back and forth at two, Hector Almada and Jacopo Tezza got a break and held serve the rest of the way to defeat Gwinyai Chingoka, 8-6. SMU's Johan Brunstrom and Henrik Soderberg upset the No. 10-ranked duo of Fabrizio Sestini and Rafael Abreu at one, 8-5, to place all the pressure on court three.

TCU's No. 3 doubles team of Jacob Martin and Alex Menichini was up a couple breaks and held a commanding 7-4 advantage on Peter Oredsson and Alex Skrypko. After faltering in the next two games, Martin held serve and gave the Purple and White a 1-0 lead. TCU has not lost a doubles point this season and owns a 23-3 doubles mark in dual matches.

Sestini made short work of Oredsson at three, 6-0, 6-4, to put the Frogs up by a 2-0 count. Almada registered TCU's next point at two thanks to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 triumph over Chingoka. Tezza clinched the match for TCU at four singles with a three-set win versus Skrypko, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0. Menichini's match at one with Brunstrom was suspended as the two were about to begin a third set. Abreu was tied up at 5-5 in a third set with Paul McNaughton at the No. 5 slot and Martin was leading 5-2 in the first stanza against Fede Murgier at six.

Next up for the Horned Frogs is the Arizona State Quadrangle in Tempe over March 7-8 at the Whiteman Tennis Center. The Horned Frogs will face Washington Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and ASU and Pepperdine will meet at 2:30 p.m. The winners and losers from each match will square off Monday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Arizona State will play in the second match.
