March 16, 2005
FORT WORTH, Texas -- The 32nd-ranked TCU men's tennis team narrowly missed picking up a victory against No. 4 Duke Wednesday on the indoor courts at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Horned Frogs fell by a 4-3 count to the Blue Devils, marking their fourth loss in a row. TCU is 5-5 on the year and Duke improved to 11-2.
Charles Brezac and Jonathan Stokke from Duke defeated Jordan Freitas and Jacob Martin, 8-5, at two doubles to start the match. Stephen Amritraj and Peter Shults gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead when they upended Radu Barbu and Andrew Ulrich at No. 3 doubles, 8-5. The Frogs snagged the top slot thanks to No. 13-ranked Rafael Abreu and Fabrizio Sestini's 9-7 triumph against Ludovic Walter and Jason Zimmermann.
Brezac put Duke ahead 2-0 after registering a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Martin at five singles. The Frogs got on the board when Abreu made short work of Zimmermann at the No. 4 spot, 6-3, 6-2. Sestini, ranked 21st in singles, evened the match up at 2-2 when he ousted No. 5-ranked Walter at the top position in two tiebreakers, 7-6(4), 7-6(2).
Barbu and Freitas were both battling in third sets when Sestini defeated Walter. At two singles, Barbu dropped the first set, 7-5, to No. 74 Stokke, but took the second, 6-3. Barbu fell behind early in the third frame by a 3-1 score before winning five of the next six games to put TCU up 3-2.
Freitas was up a break at 5-3 and serving for the match in the third set at three singles against No. 65 Amritraj. Unfortunately, the next two games belonged to the Blue Devil, however, Freitas was able to hold serve before Amritraj forced a tiebreaker. Freitas took a 2-0 advantage in the breaker before dropping seven of the next eight points.
Tied at 3-3, all eyes shifted to No. 6 singles where Ulrich, a sophomore playing in his first collegiate dual match, was battling Shults in the second set. Ulrich lost the first, 6-3, and was tied 3-3 in the second when Freitas was beaten. Shults was able to claim the next three games to give the Blue Devils a 4-3 victory.
TCU's Jacopo Tezza was unable to compete in the match due to flu-like symptoms. He has played Nos. 2 and 3 singles and doubles this season.
The Frogs begin a five-match road trip Friday, March 18, when they face No. 8 Florida at 1 p.m. CST.
