FORT WORTH – TCU’s men’s tennis team was topped by California in a 4-3 grinder Sunday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

The 36th-ranked Horned Frogs slipped to 12-5 with the loss and saw their five-match winning streak come to a close. The No. 24-ranked Golden Bears improved to 8-6 on the year with the win.

“Credit to California for being able to win all three of the remaining matches left on the court,” TCU coach David Roditi said. “We just weren’t able to take advantage of some opportunities. We’ve got a quick turnaround, but we’ll be ready to go against San Diego.”

Cal took an early 1-0 lead in the match with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. No. 45-ranked Mads Engsted and Ben McLachlan won 8-5 over Max Stevens and JT Sundling at No. 2 for Cal’s first win.

The 33rd-ranked duo of Campbell Johnson and Christoffer Konigsfeldt better TCU’s No. 64-ranked sophomore tandem of Nick Chappell and Will Stein, 8-6, to clinch the point. The Frog pair fell behind early and battled to within a game, but were not able to get over the hump.

As singles began, the Frogs put the pedal to the floor and raced to a 3-1 lead with straight-set wins. Rodolfo Bustamante was first to win for TCU, dropping Wyatt Houghton, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

Sophomore Arnau Dachs was the next to win for the Frogs, scoring a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Cal’s No. 63-ranked Konigsfeldt at No. 2 singles. The Vic, Spain, native is 12-3 this spring and has won five-straight matches.

Chappell grabbed his second-straight win over a top-60 opponent, bettering No. 57 McLachlan, 6-0, 6-3 on the top singles court. Earlier this week, Chappell knocked off No. 34-ranked Winston Lin of Columbia.

Cal added wins at Nos. 3 and 4 singles to square the match at three, setting the stage for Sundling’s match at No. 5 singles to be the deciding match. Sundling dropped the first set 6-2, but battled through a second-set tiebreaker to force a third set.

The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native fell behind a break early in the third set and was able to earn a break of his own, but was broken again at 5-all and ultimately fell 6-2, 6-7 (4), 7-5 to Cal’s Engsted.

TCU returns to action March 26 when No. 38 San Diego visits the Friedman Tennis Center. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m.
