FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 55 TCU men’s tennis team came up just short, as No. 21 Oklahoma State pulled out a 4-3 win on Friday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

After dropping the doubles point, the Horned Frogs (9-8, 0-1 Big 12) had to depend on the final singles court for the fifth time out of the last eight matches for the overall match victory over the Cowboys (18-2, 1-0 Big 12), but TCU could not convert and dropped its Big 12 home opener.

“The doubles point cost us the match today. We were too tentative and we got down too much too fast,” coach David Roditi said. “We can’t seem to figure out a way to win four points as a team. We are playing good tennis and I believe if we continue fighting and competing, then something good will happen. It was fun to see Facundo (Lugones), Arnau (Dachs) and Nick (Chappell) win at the top. They all played very good tennis.”

The doubles action of the match started in Oklahoma State’s favor, as Jakob Sude and Arjun Kadhe pulled off the 8-3 upset of No. 16 Nick Chappell and Will Stein. Just moments later though, the TCU duo of Hudson Blake and Facundo Lugones picked up their seventh win as a pair this season with an 8-1 take down of Brady Bohrnstedt and Chris Haworth on court three.

The doubles decision came down to court two and No. 73 Arnau Dachs and Trey Daniel were down 7-1, before winning the next three games to push a comeback with the score at 7-4. Lucas Gerch and Sebastian Sachs would not let the match slip away and won the next game to clinch the doubles point for the Cowboys.

TCU began the singles portion of the match strong after posting two straight-set victories on courts two and three to get its first lead in the match at 2-1. No. 121 Dachs notched the first win with a 6-4, 6-1 shut down of Sachs. No. 107 Lugones fought hard to win a tiebreaker in his first set at No. 3 singles and earned a 6-4 win in the second set to seal his victory.

Andres Alfonzo looked to have control of his match after picking up a 6-1 win in set one, but Haworth battled back to take the next two sets, 6-2, 6-4, to take the win on court six. Oklahoma State would take the lead back in the match at 3-2 after Bohrnstedt recorded a three-set win over Trey Daniel on court five.

No. 46 Chappell split his first two sets with No. 61 Sude and found himself up 4-1 in the third set, before Sude battled back to tie the set at 4-4. The two players each held serve, but Chappell proved to have the final push needed and held serve one last time, before breaking Sude to win the matched. This was Chappell’s fourth win this season over a ranked opponent.

The win on court one would not last long for TCU, as Rodolfo Bustamante was broken just seconds later on court four. With the break, Gerch sealed the overall 4-3 match win for the Cowboys with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory.

TCU will continue its opening weekend of conference play, by welcoming No. 3 Oklahoma on Sunday, March 30 at 1 p.m., at the Friedman Tennis Center and the Bernard J. ‘Tut’ Bartzen Varsity Courts.
