TCU Drops OSU 7-0 For First League Win

Will Stein helped TCU clinch the doubles point.

STILLWATER, Okla. – The TCU men’s tennis team opened the Big 12 era on the right foot Friday afternoon, notching a 7-0 win over Oklahoma State.

The No. 33-ranked Horned Frogs improved to 16-5 on the year and won their first conference match. Oklahoma State slipped to 11-9 on the year and was also playing its first league match this spring.

TCU won the doubles point in thrilling fashion to open the match, notching tiebreaker wins on courts one and three. The Cowboys struck first at No. 2 doubles, but Arnau Dachs and Orlando Superlano returned the favor, claiming a 9-8 (4) win over Rifat Biktyakov and Oleksiy Arovin.

After Dachs and Superlano had picked up their seventh-straight win, No. 79 Nick Chappell and Will Stein bettered 70th-ranked Richard Del Nunzio and Denys Pume, 9-8 (5) at No. 1 singles. The Frog duo improved to 13-4 on the year.

The Frogs jumped on the Cowboys from the beginning in singles as Rodolfo Bustamante was first to win, taking down Arovin, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. The Bauro, Brazil, native’s fifth-straight win gave TCU a 2-0 lead in the match.

No. 119 Dachs pushed the TCU advantage to 3-0 with his 6-3, 6-3 downing of Chris Haworth at No. 2 doubles. The Vic, Spain, native has won eight-straight matches. Superlano followed with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Pume at No. 3 singles to clinch the match and improve to 16-3 this spring.

Chappell, ranked 103rd, made it 5-0 in favor of the visiting Frogs with his 7-5, 6-2 win at the expense of Biktyakov at No. 1 singles. JT Sundling then followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win of his own over Brady Bohrnstedt at No. 5 singles.

Facundo Lugones polished off the TCU sweep with a win in the lone match that went three sets. He was a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) winner over Del Nunzio on the fourth singles court. The win was TCU’s eighth blanking of an opponent this season.

TCU returns to action Sunday for a 1 p.m., matchup at No. 11 Oklahoma.
