TCU Men's Tennis Advances to C-USA Championship Semifinals
April 16, 2004
The No. 17-rated TCU men's tennis team took its initial step toward its first Conference USA Championship Friday by downing Southern Miss, 4-0, in the quarterfinals. The Horned Frogs are seeded No. 1 for the tournament, which is being hosted by the University of Memphis at the HPER Courts. TCU improved to 15-5 on the season, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 8-13.
The doubles point came easily to TCU, with their first win coming at No. 3 from Jacob Martin and Alex Menichini. The duo was an 8-1 winner against Chris Rea and Reid Bourgeois. Rafael Abreu and Fabrizio Sestini, ranked 27th, clinched the point with an 8-2 victory at the top slot versus David Canudas and Dylan Mezey. Hector Almada and Jacopo Tezza did not finish their match with the Golden Eagles' tandem of Thomas Funke and Juan Garzon.
Tezza got TCU's first win in singles by making short work of Funke at the No. 4 slot, 6-1, 6-0. Martin picked up the next triumph at six against Mezey, 6-0, 6-2, which in turn snapped his four-match losing streak. Almada put the match in the books when he snared a 6-3, 6-1 victory from Garzon at the No. 2 position. It was his fourth win in a row.
The remaining matches at one, three and five singles were all suspended once the Frogs secured the fourth point.
Louisville, ranked 36th and seeded third, awaits the Frogs in the semifinals Saturday, April 17, at 9 a.m. CDT. The Cardinals defeated UAB, 4-0, to move ahead. TCU dispatched U of L earlier this season by a 4-0 score in the C-USA Shootout in Fort Worth.
