TCU Men's Tennis Loses in NCAA First Round
May 14, 2005
LUBBOCK, Texas -- The 2005 season ended Saturday for the TCU men's tennis team in Lubbock, Texas, with a 4-1 loss to 17th-ranked Wake Forest in the NCAA Championship First Round. The Horned Frogs' final record for the spring was 8-15. Texas Tech, a 4-0 winner over Army, will face the Demon Deacons (17-6) in the second round Sunday at 1 p.m. CDT.
In addition to losing the doubles point, the Frogs lost their No. 1 singles player Fabrizio Sestini during his and Rafael Abreu's match with Brett Ross and Derrick Spice at one doubles. Sestini, who is ranked 29th in singles and 13th in doubles, suffered an injury to his right foot with he and Abreu trailing 6-3. After being forced to default the match, TCU fell 8-4 at No. 2 doubles to give the Demon Deacons a 1-0 lead.
"That's about as tough of a blow as you can find," TCU head coach Joey Rivé said. "We've been in situations like this where we are down and come back with a lot of momentum. I thought our team did a great job of coming back out and not even thinking about Fabrizio and what transpired. Everybody moved up one and Andrew (Ulrich) did a good job of moving in at six. Wake Forest is a good team and played well."
Sestini walked off the court on crutches and his status for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships is unknown. The events take place over May 25-30 at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. The bracket for the 64-person singles and 32-team doubles tourneys will be released May 24.
Wake's Todd Paul, ranked 61st, put his team ahead 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Jacopo Tezza at the No. 2 slot. The Frogs got their lone point when Abreu responded at the fifth position by defeating Marius Adamski, 7-6, 6-3.
Ross upended Jordan Freitas at four singles, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, and No. 47 Spice dispatched Jacob Martin in three sets at the top spot, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, to give the Demon Deacons the win. Radu Barbu and Ulrich's matches with No. 104 Andrew Hamar and Liron Strauss on courts three and six were suspended in third sets.
#17 Wake Forest (17-6) def. #45 TCU (8-15), 4-1
