Rybakov Moves Into Round of 32

FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU men’s tennis player Alex Rybakov kicked off individual postseason action by scoring a three-set victory over No. 30 Timo Stodder of Tennessee to move onto the round of the 32 at the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Singles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in Athens, Ga., on Wednesday, May 24.

The No. 20 ranked player in the country, Rybakov opened the match by taking the first three service games for a 3-0 lead. Stodder would get on the board before the duo would hold serve the rest of the set as Rybakov took the 6-3 victory.

Stodder jumped out to an early 4-1 lead to open the second set, but the TCU sophomore bounced back by taking three straight service games to even up the set a 4-4 and get it back on serve. Stodder would hold and then break Rybakov on deuce point to steal the second set and send the match into the decisive third set.

After a hold by Stodder to open the final set, Rybakov rattled off five straight service games and broke his opponent for the fourth and fifth time in the match to go up 5-1. Stodder held serve before Rybakov easily won his final service game to take the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Rybakov moves into the second round for the second straight season and will face No. 8 Alfredo Perez of Florida on Thursday, May 25. The doubles pair of Reese Stalder and Jerry Lopez will also be in action against the No. 29 pair of Connor Johnston and Jathan Malik of Michigan. Match times will be announced later today.
