TCU Pair Advance to Elite 8

FORT WORTH, Texas – Early breaks in both sets proved to be the difference as the No. 25 pair of Jerry Lopez and Reese Stalder downed the No. 5 duo of Filip Bergevi and Florian Lakat of Cal, 6-3, 6-4, in the Round of 16 at the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Doubles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in Athens, Ga., on Friday.

With the victory, Lopez and Stalder earned All-America honors and become the 23rd and 24th Horned Frogs to earn the honor in TCU men’s tennis program history. The duo become the second and third All-Americans under the helm of head coach David Roditi and the first doubles pair to earn the honors since 2006. Since 1977, TCU has had All-America honors earned on 49 occasions and the duo join Cameron Norrie who earned singles All-America honors this season after being named the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Singles Championship.

TCU opened the match by breaking the Cal pair on deuce point to go up 2-0. The Frogs consolidated the break to take a 3-0 lead before the Bears got on the board. The teams would hold serve to finish out the set as TCU came out victorious with a 6-3 win.

Another early break in the second set put the Frogs on a run as they took a 5-1 lead. Cal responded by winning the next three straight games, but Lopez served out the set to finish off the match in straight sets.

Lopez and Stalder will face the No. 22 pair of Juan Benitez and Will Little in the quarterfinals at 3:30 p.m., CT on Saturday, May 27.
