Menichini Wins First Match, Falls in Second at ITA All-American

TCU senior Alex Menichini of the Horned Frog men's tennis squad won his opening round match in the main draw of the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn., Thursday. The nation's 47th-rated competitor, Menichini ousted No. 86 Chris Martin from defending NCAA Champion Illinois, 0-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the round of 64 to become the first Frog since Trace Fielding in 1999 to win an opening round match-up in the main draw. His afternoon contest with No. 7 Michael Kogan of Tulane also went three sets, but in the Green Wave senior's favor, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Menichini's fall record now stands at 4-2, with both of his losses coming at the hands of top-10 foes. September's Conference USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Month fell to No. 1-ranked Benedikt Dorsch of Baylor two weeks ago in the semifinals of the HEB/Baylor Intercollegiate. Menichini is 2-2 against ranked opponents this year.
Next up for TCU is the the Midland Racquet Club Invitational in Midland, Texas. Only two Frog netters will attend the event, which takes place over Oct. 17-19. The following weekend, the Purple and White will host the ITA South Central Championships at Bayard H. Friedman Center from Oct. 24-27.
