FORT WORTH – TCU continued and closed play at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships on Monday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
Sophomore Nick Chappell was a winner in the morning quarterfinal session, but fell in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-2, to Baylor’s Julian Lenz. The Indianapolis native went 4-1 at the event of was one of the last four standing of the state’s best players.
In his quarterfinal match, Chappell won a three-set thriller over Gaston Cuadranti of SMU, a 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 decision. The win vaulted the 77th-ranked Chappell into the championship semifinals against Lenz.
Chappell and Orlando Superlano also advanced to the finals of the doubles consolation bracket. They were 8-5 winners over Jonathan Chang and Peter Frank of Rice, but Tuesday's consolation finals will not be contested.
Sophomore Blake Wiggins was named the consolation champion after Texas Tech’s Jeff Bryan withdrew due to injury. In other singles action, Facundo Lugones slipped in the championship quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-2 to Lenz and Texas A&M’s Harrison Adams got past Arnau Dachs, 6-7, 6-4, 10-3, in the second consolation draw.
The USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships come to a close Tuesday. TCU closes the fall portion of its schedule at the UT Longhorn Invitational on the weekend of Nov. 1-3.
