Abreu, Sestini in Doubles Championship Match at ITA Regional
Oct. 24, 2004
Rafael Abreu and Fabrizio Sestini from the TCU men's tennis team will defend their ITA South Central Regional doubles title Monday thanks to a pair of wins Sunday in Austin, Texas. TCU's tandem, ranked No. 8 in the country, defeated Ben Harknett and Tony Hearle from Rice, 8-5, in the quarters and blitzed SMU's Gwinyai Chingoka and Paul McNaughton by an 8-1 count in the semis. TCU's No. 1 duo takes a nine-match winning streak at the regional into the finals dating back to last year. They are 9-2 this fall.
Abreu and Sestini face either Lars Porschke and Matija Zgaga from Baylor or Evghenii Corduneau and Dusan Tabak of Louisiana-Lafayette tomorrow. Darkness and bad weather Saturday put the tournament behind schedule and did not allow the two schools to get their semifinal match in today.
Jacopo Tezza, TCU's only remaining player in singles, narrowly missed reaching the semifinals when he fell to Bojan Szumanski from Texas Tech. Tezza won the first set 6-4 and was leading 5-4 in the second before his legs started cramping. He dropped the second stanza 7-5 and fell behind 2-0 in the third before retiring.
Tezza teamed with Jordan Freitas for a round of 16 match-up with Porschke and Zgaga, but it ended in an 8-6 triumph for the Baylor pair.
