Frogs Open Play at ITA South Central Regional

COLLEGE STATION, Texas--The TCU men's tennis team opened play Saturday at the ITA South Central Regional Championships at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center with the first two rounds of singles and doubles action.

Senior Kriegler Brink and sophomore Emanuel Brighiu, both of whom received first-round byes in singles competition, advanced to the Round of 32 after posting second-round victories Saturday. Brink, seeded ninth overall, easily defeated UTSA's Pedro Zaotelli, 6-1, 6-2, while Brighiu downed Louisiana-Lafayette's Piotr Olechowski, 6-1, 6-3.

Brink next faces SMU's Brian Griffin Sunday at 10 a.m. Brighiu is set to take on Sinisa Markovic of Texas Tech at the same time.

In doubles play, the Horned Frogs' top two squads moved on to Sunday's Round of 16 with second-round victories. Brink and sophomore Zach Nichols, the draw's No. 2 overall seed, dispatched Jaume Farris and Alex Pavlov of Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 8-2, to move on. The tournament's No. 5 tandem of Brighiu and sophomore Frog teammate Adrian Simon posted an 8-1 decision over Louisiana-Lafayette's Arlen Domoney and Stefan Hawkins.

Both TCU doubles teams will continue play Sunday afternoon--Brink/Nichols against Louisiana-Lafayette's pair of Piotr Banas and Olechowski and Brighiu/Simon vs. Baylor's duo of Marc Bruche and Dominik Mueller.

In other action, three Frogs will continue singles play in the consolation bracket after dropping out of the main draw Saturday. Junior Eric Olson, who suffered a first-round loss to David Pace of Texas A&M Corpus Christi (6-1, 6-2), was the lone TCU competitor to survive the opening consolation with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Christopher Jordan of Prairie View A&M.

Nichols and Simon also will pick up action Sunday in the consolation bracket. Both Frogs posted wins in the opening round of the main draw, Nicholls a 6-3, 6-2 decision over UTSA's Jorge Degado and Simon a 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 comeback win over UTSA's Robin Fernandes, before dropping out during the Round of 64. Junior Cameron Nash was the other TCU player with a victory Saturday, a 6-4, 6-2 win over UTA's Adam Srkala, but he fell out of the main draw in the ensuing round with a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Baylor's Attila Bucko.
