Superlano Claims Title in Austin
Nov. 4, 2012
AUSTIN, Texas -- TCU senior Orlando Superlano claimed the singles B-draw Sunday at the UT Invitational at Texas' Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Superlano won four matches en route to the title, including knocking off Ben Chen of Texas in Sunday's championship match. It was the only match of the event for Superlano to go three sets, with Superlano claiming a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win.
The San Cristobal, Venezuela native was a 7-6, 6-2 winner at the expense of UTA's Soren Goritzka in the round of 16 before bettering Logon Collins of Marquette, 6-4 6-2 in the quarterfinals and John Harrison Warden of Oklahoma, 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals.
Superlano is TCU's lone senior on the roster and had a season-ending knee injury in the season opener last spring.
"I'm very happy for Orlando," TCU coach David Roditi said. "He's worked extremely hard since his knee surgery and nobody wants it more than him. He has learned a lot about his game in one year so it will be fun to see him play this spring."
