Preview: Duke & Florida

FORT WORTH, Texas – Spring break in Florida is set to begin for the No. 33 TCU men’s tennis team as they will come face-to-face with two top-15 opponents in No. 12 Duke and No. 9 Florida on March 13 and March 14, respectively.

The Horned Frogs (7-3) will open with the Blue Devils (10-6) on Tuesday at 4 p.m., CT, at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus in Lake Nona, Fla. In a unique opportunity, the men’s team will be playing at the same time as the TCU women’s team who will also be facing Duke at the USTA national headquarters. The Frogs will then wrap-up the trip by traveling to Gainesville, Fla., to take on the Gators (8-5) on Wednesday at 5 p.m., CT.

TCU Notables
TCU last saw action on Thursday before spring break started as the team picked up a 6-1 victory over Penn. With the win, the Frogs improved to 5-1 at home with victories in three of the last four matches.

Alastair Gray (No. 30), Alex Rybakov (No. 32) and Trevor Johnson (No. 72) continue to be ranked in the Oracle/ITA singles poll with Rybakov pacing the Frogs with 12 wins including the last five straight while Alastair Gray has 11 this season. Johnson is 7-1 this season and 3-1 against ranked opponents. In doubles, Gray and Rybakov still lead the way in the rankings at No. 20 with Rybakov and Guillermo Nuñez sitting at No. 41. The duo of Bertus Kruger and Reese Stalder are pacing the team in doubles action with six wins on the season and a 4-0 mark at the No. 3 spot.

Scouting the Blue Devils
Duke kicked off ACC action in the last week with a 5-2 victory over Virginia Tech before dropping a 4-3 decision to North Carolina. Nicolas Alvarez is the only ranked Blue Devil at No. 25 and is coming off a straight-set victory over the No. 1 ranked player. Alvarez is one of five Duke players with double-digit wins with Nick Stachowiak leading the way with a 21-5 mark. In doubles, Stachowiak and Sean Sculley lead the way with 10 wins with five of them coming at the No. 1 spot.

Scouting the Gators
Florida recently kicked-off action in the SEC and is 3-1 so far with wins over Georgia (5-2), Tennessee (6-1) and Auburn (6-1) before dropping a 5-2 decision to Mississippi State this past weekend. The Gators are 5-0 at home and have five ranked singles players and four ranked doubles teams. Johannes Ingildsen and Alfredo Perez own the No. 1 doubles ranking with a 3-1 mark on the year and the duo are also ranked in the top 10 in singles at No. 6 and No. 7, respectively. Florida as two more doubles tandems ranked in the top 15 with Chase Perez-Blanco and Oliver Crawford checking in at No. 10 and McCalin Kessler and Duarte Vale sitting at No. 12.

All-Time Series Records
Tuesday’s match marks the 17th meeting all-time between TCU and Duke with the Blue Devils holding the 11-5 advantage in the all-time series record. The teams will be facing each other for the first time since 2015 when Duke picked up a 4-2 win at the ITA Indoor Team National Championships. The teams first faced each other in 1981 with the Frogs coming out on top in three of the first four meetings, but Duke has taken the victory in the seven matches dating back to 2002. Tuesday’s match will be the fifth time the teams have played on neutral grounds with TCU holding the 3-1 advantage.

Wednesday’s match against Florida will mark the fifth all-time with the series all even at 2-2. This will be the third straight meeting in Gainesville, with the Gators claiming the last two wins in 2005 and 2014. TCU was able to snag the first two wins in the series in February of 1995 and 1996 when head coach David Roditi was a player.
