SAN DIEGO – TCU’s men’s tennis team begins play at the Mountain West Men’s Tennis Championship on Friday when it squares off with UNLV at San Diego State’s Aztec Tennis Center at 12 p.m. CDT.
The Horned Frogs, seeded No. 4, are 8-14 this season and tallied a 2-3 mark during MW regular season play. No. 5 seed UNLV posted a 7-15, 1-4 regular season record. In the meeting between the two schools April 6, TCU was a 6-1 winner in Las Vegas giving the Frogs a 10-1 advantage in the all-time series.
TCU has won three conference tournament titles all-time (2006, 2008, 2010), tied with New Mexico and San Diego State for the most in league history. In its six appearances at the MW tournament, TCU has an 11-3 record. TCU was the tourney champion in 2006, the last time SDSU hosted the postseason tourney.
The winner of Friday’s match advances to face top-seeded Boise State, who earned a first-round bye, in the semifinal round Saturday. TCU also drew the No. 4 seed in the 2010 Mountain West Men’s Tennis Championship, its last time to win the league crown.
A pair of freshmen were TCU’s top performers during the regular season in singles play. Nick Chappell, who played all of his matches from the No. 1 position, went 13-6 during the regular season. Facundo Lugones tallied a 12-8 ledger while playing at four different spots in the lineup.
In doubles play, Daniel Sanchez and Max Stevens hold a 9-5 record, including a 5-1 mark from the No. 3 spot. Freshmen Chappell and Will Stein are 4-3 as doubles partners, while the duo of Lugones and JT Sundling is 2-1.
