BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
IRVING, Texas – TCU men’s tennis collected shares of two Big 12 individual championships this season, the conference office announced this week. Sophomore Facundo Lugones split the No. 4 singles title, while fellow sophomores Nick Chappell and Will Stein earned a three-way share at No. 1 doubles.
Lugones split the No. 4 singles title with Oklahoma freshman Axel Alvarez Llamas after both players totaled 4-1 records this season. A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Lugones was an All-Mountain West selection in singles last season in his first season on campus. He owns a 22-12 overall singles record this season and will take a three-match winning streak into the postseason.
Chappell and Stein, the nation’s No. 53-ranked doubles tandem, also posted a 4-1 mark at No. 1 doubles in league matches to split the Big 12 individual title with two other duos, Baylor’s Mate Zsiga/Diego Galeano and Oklahoma’s Costin Paval/Dane Webb. The Frog pairing’s only conference setback came to Paval/Webb, while it topped Zsiga/Galeano in the regular-season finale last Sunday.
To be eligible for a Big 12 individual regular season conference title, a student-athlete must have completed at least three matches at that individual position. If a student-athlete competes at a higher position in the conference season, it will count towards his or her individual conference record.
The Horned Frogs finished the regular season at 17-8 overall and in fourth place in the Big 12 standings with a 2-3 league. The squad faces No. 5 seed Texas Tech in the opening round of the Big 12 Championship on Friday in Norman, Okla.
