MTEN Preview: Big 12 Championship

FORT WORTH, Texas – Riding a 12-match winning streak and a second straight Big 12 regular season title, the No. 4 TCU men’s tennis team will head to Norman, Okla., for the 2017 Big 12 Tournament that will run from April 28-29 at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

The Horned Frogs (17-4) earned a first round bye and will face No. 15 Oklahoma (15-9) on Friday at 10 a.m., in the semifinals that will air live on FloTennis. This marks the second straight season TCU and the Sooners will face-off in the semifinals.

TCU Notables
After starting the season 2-2, TCU has won 15 of its last 17 matches including a victory in the last 12 straight matches. For the first time in program history, the Frogs went undefeated in Big 12 action as they secured three sweeps and two 4-1 victories on their way to a second straight regular season conference title.

Cameron Norrie, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, became the first TCU player since 1996 to achieve the No. 1 ranking in the Oracle/ITA singles poll to lead TCU and is 16-1 on the season and 14-1 against ranked opponents. Alex Rybakov checks in at No. 20 and is riding a team-best 17-match winning streak in singles action with nine wins over ranked foes. Guillermo Nuñez rounds out the singles rankings at No. 85 with 15 wins this season.

In doubles action, TCU has won the doubles point in 18 matches this season and has four ranked doubles teams. Reese Stalder and Jerry Lopez lead the way at No. 33 with nine wins on the season and three over ranked opponents. Lopez pairs with Cameron Norrie for a No. 39 rankings, while Stalder and Trevor Johnson sit at No. 42. Nuñez and Rybakov lead the team with 13 wins this season and round out the rankings at No. 49.

Scouting the Sooners
Oklahoma scored a 4-3 victory over Texas on Thursday to move into the semifinals and face TCU on Friday. The Sooners, ranked No. 15 nationally, wrapped up the regular season last weekend by downing Oklahoma State to claim the No. 5 seed in the tournament. Spencer Papa leads the Sooners with a No. 18 ranking and 10 wins on the season. Andrew Harris checks in at No. 30, while Alex Ghilea and Florin Bragust sit at No. 40 and No. 105, respectively. Oklahoma has three ranked doubles teams with Papa and Harris leading the way at No. 15.

Frogs in Postseason
For the fourth time in the last five years, TCU will be making an appearance in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship. The Frogs have made an appearance in a conference tournament final 18 times in program history with TCU taking the crown on 14 of those occasions. Should TCU win on Friday, it will mark the second straight appearance in a conference finals with Roditi at the helm of the program.
