Norrie Named Big 12 Player of the Year

May 11, 2017

FORT WORTH, Texas – For the first time in program history, TCU junior Cameron Norrie earned Big 12 Player of the Year honors as head coach David Roditi and three other Horned Frogs were also honored with All-Big 12 awards as announced by the conference office on Thursday.

For the third straight season, TCU was able to nab two of the main honors as Roditi was named Coach of the Year for the third time while Norrie earned the top player honors. Norrie, along with Alex Rybakov, was named to the All-Big 12 Singles First Team and All-Big 12 Doubles Second Team for the second straight season while Guillermo Nuñez garnered All-Big 12 Singles and Doubles Second Team honors. Trevor Johnson rounds out the honorees by being named to the All-Big 12 Doubles Second Team.

The No. 1 player in the country, Norrie was the unanimous selection for the top honor to become the first player in program history to be named Big 12 Player of the Year. The junior is 18-1 this season with a 16-1 mark against ranked opponents. Norrie went 10-0 in singles and doubles in conference action this season and is currently riding an eight-match winning streak in singles as well as wins in nine of his last 10 doubles matches. Norrie was recently named Most Outstanding Player of the Big 12 Tournament to become the first player to garner the honor in back-to-back seasons.

Roditi became the third coach in conference history to win three straight Big 12 Coach of the Year honors as he earns the honor outright this season. In his seventh season with the program, Roditi has led the team on a 14-match winning streak and helped guide the Frogs to back-to-back Big 12 regular season and tournament titles. In his career, Roditi has put together 127 victories with 72 of those wins coming over ranked opponents.

Rybakov earned double honors for the second straight season and is riding a team-best 18-match winning streak in singles action. The No. 20 ranked singles player in the country, Rybakov has been ranked in singles and doubles all season long and has a team-best 13 wins with Nuñez in doubles. Nuñez earned All-Big 12 Singles second team honors for the second straight season and earned doubles honors for the first time in his career. Johnson returned to action at the end of March and went undefeated in singles and doubles in Big 12 play and has gone 12-1 overall since returning.

TCU is the No. 6 seed in the upcoming 2017 NCAA Division I Team Championship and will host the first and second round matches at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth from May 12-13. The Frogs will face Jackson State in the opening round on Friday at 2 p.m., while Florida State and Arkansas will also be on hand for a first round match at 11 a.m. The winners of the two matches will face off in the second round on Saturday at 2 p.m.
