Men's Tennis: NCAA Preview
May 20, 2014
FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU men’s tennis juniors Nick Chappell and Will Stein are set to open post season play for TCU by competing in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships beginning Wednesday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
No. 43 Chappell will be the first Horned Frog to compete on the University of Georgia campus, as he will face No. 17 Winston Lin of Columbia on May 21 at 9 a.m., in the singles bracket. Chappell will then team up with partner Stein on Thursday, May 22 to begin the doubles bracket against No. 4 Gonzalez Austin and Ryan Lipman of Vanderbilt.
“Nick has been working hard to make nationals individually,” coach David Roditi said. “He had some outstanding wins this year and I know he’s excited to compete against the best. This is where he belongs.
“Nick and Will have been doing very well all year. This will be a great experience for them and an opportunity to finish the year on a positive note playing against all the top teams in the nation.”
This is the first time since 2008 that TCU has sent a singles player and a doubles pair to compete in the NCAA Championships. Chappell becomes the 38th player in the history of the program to compete in the singles bracket, while the duo of Chappell and Stein are the 30th doubles pair.
Chappell was a constant presence at No. 1 singles for TCU this season and finished with a 21-16 overall record and five wins over ranked opponents. Chappell boosted his NCAA chances by recording the biggest upset of his career with a straight-set win over No. 5 Guillermo Alcorta of Oklahoma at the Big 12 Tennis Championships. He is currently sitting at a career-high ranking of No. 43.
Chappell’s opening round opponent is a familiar foe, as the Indianapolis native and Lin faced off on March 20 in the TCU vs. Columbia dual match. Lin barely edged out Chappell in the match-up, as Lin claimed a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 victory on court one. Lin is currently riding a 21-match winning streak headed into tomorrow’s match and has only dropped two matches on the season.
The 11th ranked Chappell and Stein will begin their quest on Thursday against the Vanderbilt duo who are seeded No. 3 in the doubles bracket. Austin and Lipman have never been ranked lower than No. 5 by the ITA in the dual season and were ranked No. 1 at one point this season. The duo are the winningest doubles pair in Vanderbilt history with a single-season record of 26-6 and a 32-9 record overall.
Chappell and Stein posted 24 wins this season, brought down seven ranked opponents and were runner-up at No. 1 doubles in the Big 12. The duo started the year by reaching the semifinals of the ITA All-American Championships and took out the No. 3 ranked team in the nation at the time. The pairs’ career-high ranking of No. 10 came after defeating the No. 13-ranked team out of Texas for the second time this season. Since April 5, the duo have only dropped one match.
A Chappell win over Lin tomorrow would set up a Wednesday second round match with the winner of Leonard Stakhovsky of Penn State and Austin of Vanderbilt. With a win on the doubles side, Chappell and Stein will face the winner of the Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp of Mississippi State and Brett Clark and Brayden Schnur of North Carolina match.
A live stream of the matches can be found at NCAA.com, with final results and a recap available on GoFrogs.com following the completion of both competitions.
