Rybakov Earns Big 12 Academic Honor

FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU men’s tennis player Alex Rybakov added to his postseason awards on Friday morning by being honored as the 2018 Big 12 Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The junior becomes the first men’s tennis Horned Frog to earn the postseason academic honor from the conference. The Coral Springs, Fla., native is fresh off his third season with the Frogs where he became the fifth student-athlete and first since 1994 to garner singles and doubles All-America honors during their careers. A communications studies major, Rybakov holds a 3.77 GPA off the court, while also leading TCU to its third straight Big 12 regular season title on the court.
The captain for the 2018 season, Rybakov was the top performer in singles and doubles for TCU to help lead the team to its fourth straight Round of 16 appearance in the NCAA Championship. The junior posted a 19-6 overall mark this past season in singles while also defeating 12 ranked opponents. Rybakov finished ranked No. 25 in the Oracle/ITA singles poll and was ranked as high as No. 12 this season.
In doubles, Rybakov went 18-5 overall with a 4-0 mark in Big 12 action and 10-2 against ranked foes. Rybakov paired with Guillermo Nuñez this year and played at the No. 1 position all season long. The duo reached as high as No. 4 in the Oracle/ITA doubles poll and finished the season ranked No. 8. From February to the end of season, Rybakov won 12 of his last 15 matches completed in singles and helped lead TCU to a 12-match winning streak. Rybakov was named to the All-Big 12 singles and doubles first teams for the third straight season.
TCU wrapped up the 2017-18 season by finishing with an overall mark of 20-5 and advancing to the Sweet 16 of the team championship for the fourth straight season and 17th time in program history. Nuñez and Trevor Johnson became the third senior class in program history to reach the Sweet 16 in four consecutive seasons while also helping TCU nab five Big 12 regular season and tournament titles in their careers. The Frogs produced two All-Americans with Rybakov and Nuñez earning the automatic doubles honors with a top eight seed in the championship.
