Lady Frogs Fall to Santa Clara
Jan. 6, 2003
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -
TCU was able to get out to an early eight-point lead, but the Broncos refused to let the visiting Lady Frogs maintain that for long. Santa Clara chipped away at the TCU advantage until the Broncos tied the game at 25 all with 6:04 to go in the first half. Multiple lay-ups gave Santa Clara a 33-28 lead going into intermission.
The Broncos continued their run as the second half began, pushing their lead to as many as 13 with 10:38 to play. With just under seven minutes to play, an Evans three-pointer cut the Santa Clara advantage to just four. The Broncos' lead crept out again, until junior Ebony Shaw drained a three with 2:14 to go to make it four. SCU's Kayla Huss dropped in a pair of free throws, but junior Kim Ortega drilled a jumper to counter. That was as close as the Lady Frogs could get as Santa Clara scored on five free throws to give them the final nine-point margin.
Irvin led the team with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Evans dropped in 13 points and a team-high 17 boards. Senior Candace Baldwin and Irvin each had three steals.
TCU will next return to Texas to take on in-state Conference USA rival Houston at Hofheinz Pavilion on Sunday, Jan. 12 before traveling to Cincinnati and Louisville. Home C-USA action starts Friday, Jan. 24 for the Lady Frogs when they entertain East Carolina.
