TCU Comes Up Just Short Against No. 12 Texas
Jan. 25, 2017
FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU women's basketball continues to grow, but came out on the losing end of a tight battle with No. 12 Texas, 77-69, at Schollmaier Arena on Wednesday night.
TCU (10-10, 2-7) trailed most of the night, but never by more than seven points until the final minute, and usually closer than that. In fact, the Frogs got within two in the fourth quarter, but Texas (15-4, 9-0) made the necessary plays down the stretch to stay unbeaten in Big 12 play.
Freshman Amber Ramirez led TCU with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, one of which got TCU within two in the final quarter. Sophomore Amy Okonkwo added 13 points and junior AJ Alix added 12 for TCU.
Ariel Atkins led Texas with 17 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. She also recorded all three of her steals in the fourth quarter to spark Texas' deciding run. Joyner Holmes added 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Longhorns.
The Frogs got within four, 69-65, on a pair of Adeola Akomolafe free throws with 3:02 to go, but on the next possession Holmes converted a 3-point play that essentially sealed the game for Texas.
