Jan. 31, 2003
MARQUETTE, Wis. - The TCU Lady Frogs utilized strong shooting to handily defeat Marquette, 79-54, at the U.S. Cellular Arena on Friday night. TCU's first road win of the season moves the Frog record to 9-10, 2-4 C-USA, while the Golden Eagles fall to 10-8, 2-4 C-USA. Senior Tricia Payne went 7-of-10 from three-point range, setting a new career high for treys and leading all scorers in the victory.
The Lady Frogs led from the beginning, allowing Marquette to get within one point only once, at the 12:37 mark behind two free throws from Katie O'Grady. TCU hit seven threes in the first half, while the Golden Eagles scored only one three out of seven field goals made. Twelve of Marquette's 27 first-half points came from the free throw line.
The Lady Frogs were hot once again in the second half, outscoring the Golden Eagles 10 to 2 in the first five and a half minutes of play to go up 48-29. TCU shot over 50% from three-point land during the second stanza, and for the fourth time this season six or more Frogs hit a trey. Marquette spent much of the game at the charity stripe, going 24-of-28. Payne dropped in a pair of threes with less than one minute to play to give the Frogs their final 79-54 margin.
"I thought we took care of the ball as well as we have this season," said head coach Jeff Mittie. "It's good to get one (a win) on the road."
"Tricia Payne will go down in school history as one of the best shooters," he continued. "Tonight was an outstanding night for her."
The Lady Frogs will travel take on DePaul (15-6, 4-2 C-USA) on Sunday, Feb. 2. The game will be shown on the metroplex's KFWD-TV (Ch. 52) live at 2:00 p.m.
