Lady Frogs Win Second Straight at Home
Feb. 14, 2003
FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Lady Frogs (11-12, 4-5 C-USA) survived a late Saint Louis rally to win 65-54 on Friday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The win moves TCU's record to 11-12 overall and 4-5 in conference play, while the Billikens fall to 14-11, 5-5 C-USA.
With the exception of one time during the entire game, the Lady Frogs led throughout. Saint Louis stayed close much of the first half and were within three with just over four minutes to play when TCU went on an 8-0 scoring run to close the period. The Lady Frogs went to the locker room with a 33-22 advantage.
In the second stanza, the Billikens were able to cut the Frog lead to a mere six points several times, including on a lay-up by Harmonie King with 4:15 to play in the game. However, the Lady Frogs found ways to rally themselves each time and extend their lead. In the final seven and a half minutes of the game, TCU scored 11 of its 13 points from the charity stripe.
"I thought we did a nice job early in the game of breaking their press," said head coach Jeff Mittie. "AP (Amy Pack) got loose in there, and Sandora (Irvin) got in there, too. I was pleased with our defense. Offensively in the second half, we didn't attack their press as well. We needed to stay aggressive."
Sophomore Sandora Irvin nearly earned a rare triple-double as she tallied 11 points, 12 rebounds and nine blocks in the victory. Junior Ebony Shaw led the Lady Frogs in scoring with 14 points and four steals.
The Lady Frogs host Memphis on Sunday Feb. 16 at 2:00 p.m. in C-USA action at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. TCU Athletics will celebrate Black History Month at the game. Next weekend, TCU hits the road for its final regular season road C-USA contests of the year at Southern Miss and Tulane. The Tulane game will be shown on ESPN2 beginning at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23.
