TCU Drops Nail-Biter on Saturday
Feb. 18, 2017
FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU women's basketball team led for most of the game, but a cold second half eventually caught up to it as No. 24 Kansas State grabbed a 68-65 win inside Schollmaier Arena on Saturday.
TCU (12-14, 4-11) played its annual Play4Kay game and wore pink uniforms. The Frogs were hot early and led by as many as 13 points late in the second quarter. Kansas State (19-8, 9-6), however, began to chip away in the second half and eventually took its first lead with under two minutes to go in the game.
Amy Okonkwo led the Frogs with a career-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. She added 10 rebounds as TCU outrebounded the Wildcats, one of the taller teams in the Big 12. Amber Ramirez added 12 points for TCU.
Kindred Wesemann led Kansas State with 19 points, including two go-ahead baskets in the final two minutes of the game. The Wildcats made six of their last seven shots while TCU hit just one of its last eight to close the game.
However, Wesemann hit a 3-pointer on K-State's next possession to cut the lead down to two. Both teams traded empty possessions, and with 1:55 to go Wesemann hit another trey to give K-State its first lead, 64-63.
AJ Alix then scored her only two points on a pair of free throws to regain the lead for TCU, 65-64, with 1:48 to go. However, after a missed 3-pointer from the Wildcats, Wesmann grabbed a steal and scored in transition to put K-State up 66-65, with 1:08 to go.
TCU came up empty on its final two possessions, including with just three seconds remaining as a lob pass was a little too high for a wide-open Adeola Akomolafe. A conversion on that bucket would have surely sent the game to overtime.
