Feb. 21, 2003
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The TCU Lady Frogs went back over the .500 mark for the first time since early January as they defeated Southern Miss, 69-63, on Friday night at Reed Green Coliseum. The win moves TCU's record to 13-12 overall and 6-5 in C-USA play, while Southern Miss goes to 12-12, 5-6 C-USA. Junior Amy Pack scored a game-high 20, including 12 in the second half.
The first half was 20 minutes of spurts. Southern Miss got off to a quick 11-3 start before sophomore Sandora Irvin scored six straight points to start a TCU rally. The Lady Frogs pulled to within two when junior Kim Ortega drilled a three-pointer with 8:14 to go. However, the Golden Eagles outscored TCU 13-5 over the next five minutes to push out to a ten-point advantage at 28-18. Behind Pack's six points in the final two minutes, the Lady Frogs cut the USM lead to only two, but a three by Allison Story with 10 seconds left put the halftime score at 33-28 Southern Miss.
The Lady Frogs came out ready to play in the second half, chipping away at the Golden Eagles' lead slowly, but surely. The first TCU lead of the game, at 47-46, came with 11:22 left to play on the second of two straight Pack shots. The Lady Frogs were able to push their lead to eight with a trey by junior Tiffany Evans with just over eight minutes left. Southern Miss crept back to within one at 60-59, but the Golden Eagles could get no closer. TCU outscored USM 6-2 in the final two minutes of play to take the 69-63 victory.
Three Lady Frogs scored in double-figures for the evening, Pack with 20, junior Ebony Shaw with 16 and Irvin with 13. Shaw was also the leading rebounder with seven. Freshman Andrea Honer dished out a team- and career-high five assists.
On Sunday, Feb. 23, the Lady Frogs meet up with the Tulane Green Wave. The game will be shown nationally on ESPN2 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
