Feb. 28, 2003
FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Lady Frogs used scoring from 11 of 12 players to send the UAB Blazers packing in a 74-49 Lady Frog win on Friday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The victory moves TCU's record at 14-13 overall and 7-6 in Conference USA play, while UAB falls to 8-18, 4-9 C-USA. Head coach Jeff Mittie earned his 79th win at the helm of the Lady Frogs to surpass Hall of Famer Fran Garmon as the all-time winningest coach in TCU women's basketball history.
UAB scored early to take two leads before TCU came charging back. From the 13:30 mark on, the Blazers were unable to get closer than a single point and the Lady Frogs expanded their lead as they held UAB scoreless for nearly four minutes. Sophomore Sandora Irvin scored six of TCU's eight points in the final 1:32 of the first half, giving the Lady Frogs a 33-21 halftime advantage.
TCU saw strong play from senior Grace Gantt and juniors Tiffany Evans and Ebony Shaw in the second half. The Blazers tried to rally behind the 20 second-half points of Michelle Smith and Natasha Thomas, but it was not enough. The Lady Frogs claimed their fourth straight win at home, 74-49.
"Our balance was tough to defend," said Mittie. "Everyone had a hand in tonight's victory. I thought we'd practiced well all week and we just hoped it would carry over into this weekend. Some of our shots were not going in early, but in the second half we shot much better and got some breakaways."
Irvin led the TCU scoring and rebounding effort with 14 points and added 13 boards for her tenth double-double of the season. Senior Tricia Payne dished out four assists in the win, while Evans posted three blocks.
Sunday's game versus South Florida marks the end of the regular season for the Lady Frogs. Action will begin at 2:00 p.m. and it is Senior Day. TCU's three seniors are Candace Baldwin, Grace Gantt and Tricia Payne.
