TCU Women Tie Schol-Record Winning Streak

Lady Frogs outlast Golden Hurricane 62-58

TULSA, Oklahoma (February 2, 2001)--After a nine-day break from games, the TCU Lady Frogs had a sluggish start against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, but rebounded in the second half for a gutty 62-58 road victory. The triumph extended TCU's winning streak to a school-record-tying eight games.

With the victory, the front-running Frogs improved to 7-0 in the Western Athletic Conference and are now out to a school-best 15-4 start. The team also snapped a three-game losing streak at Tulsa.

TCU struggled in the early going, missing their first nine shots. The Frogs first bucket came at the 14:47 mark of the first half after Tulsa had built a 7-0 lead to start the contest.

The Frogs trailed by as many as 11 points (30-19) in the opening stanza, and had a nine-point deficit at the intermission (30-21). TCU shot just 8-for-33 in the first half (24.2 percent). It was just the fifth time that TCU has trailed at halftime this season, and the Frogs are now 2-3 when behind at the midway point.

TCU came out on fire to start the second half and tied the score at 34 on a basket by Kati Safaritova. After a Tulsa free throw, Jill Sutton's off-balance jumper gave the Frogs their first lead of the game at 36-35 with 15:46 remaining.

TCU's 26-10 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half gave the squad a 47-40 lead, but Tulsa surged ahead 54-51 over the course of the next five minutes. The final stretch was back-and-forth, but clutch free-throwing shooting for the Frogs iced the game. TCU's final seven points over the last two minutes came from the charity stripe. Ashanti Nix put the game out of reach with a pair of free throws with 4.8 seconds left.

Four Frogs scored in double figures: Payne (18), Sutton (10), Safaritova (10) and Janice Thomas (10). Thomas also grabbed 10 rebounds to claim her fifth double-double of the season.

The Frogs next host UTEP at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on Tuesday, February 6 at 7:00 p.m.
