Streaking Frogs Race Past Owls
FORT WORTH, Texas (February 12, 2001) -- The TCU Lady Frogs continued to breeze through the Western Athletic Conference as the squad picked up a 72-53 victory over the Rice Owls on Monday night . The victory moved TCU, in search of its first-ever postseason berth, to 18-4 on the season and 10-0 in the WAC.
The triumph also extended TCU's winning streak to a school-best 11 games and Daniel-Meyer Coliseum victory streak to 10 games. The Frogs are now 14-0 when scoring at least 70 points.
The Frogs never trailed in the ballgame, as they scored just eight seconds into the contest on a Janice Thomas layup. TCU jumped out to a 12-4 lead at the 14:55 mark and never looked back. The Frogs' defense took charge in the latter stages of the first half, holding Rice scoreless for eight minutes. Over that time, TCU had a 15-point run on the Owls, and turned a 22-17 advantage into a 37-17 lead.
TCU bolted out to a 37-21 halftime bulge thanks to 50 percent shooting (14-for-28) from the floor. The Frogs were 6-of-9 from three-point range. Senior Jill Sutton led the charge with a 4-for-4 first-half performance from downtown.
Rice was able to get as close as 10 in the second half, but TCU countered the rally by scoring 17 of the game's final 25 points. As a result, Rice became the 11th consecutive opponent to fail to reach the 70-point plateau against the Frogs.
While TCU improved to 18-4, Rice dropped to 12-10 overall and 4-6 in conference. Rice, who managed just 24.1-percent shooting in a 58-35 loss in the teams' first meeting this season, was limited to a 34.5 percentage on Monday night. TCU has now won three straight games over Rice dating back to last season. It was TCU's first home victory over Rice since 1991.
Four Frogs reached double-figures, led by Thomas with 17. Sutton and Tricia Payne added 15 points apiece, while Kati Safaritova totaled 14. Safaritova dragged down a team-high seven rebounds.
The Frogs now take to the road for their next three games. TCU plays at Nevada on Friday, Feb. 16, at Fresno State on Sunday, Feb. 18 and at UTEP on Thursday, Feb 21. The Frogs final three regular-season games are at home, beginning on Sunday, Feb. 25.
