Okonkwo Named Big 12 Player of Week

Dec. 22, 2017

FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU junior forward Amy Okonkwo has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Friday afternoon.

Okonkwo scored 31 points in TCU’s lone game of the week, a 90-68 win over Hampton on Wednesday. The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native was very efficient against the Lady Pirates, setting her career-high scoring mark on just 14 shot attempts in just 19 minutes.

She was 11-of-14 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from deep, while also hitting 7-of-8 free throws. Okonkwo also added seven rebounds as the Frogs finished nonconference play with a 9-2 record, its best since 2003-04.

Okonkwo is now sixth in the Big 12 in scoring this season at 16.4 points per game. She is also among the conference’s leaders in field goal percentage at 55 percent and free throw percentage at 91 percent.

Okonkwo is just the second Frog in program history to be named Big 12 Player of the Week, joining Zahna Medley who won the award twice in her career, most recently on Feb. 15, 2016.

The Frogs return to the court on Thursday, Dec. 28, when they welcome No. 9 West Virginia to Schollmaier Arena for the opening of Big 12 Conference play.
