Welcome to this season's Coaches Corner with TCU associate head coach Brian Ostermann.
Coach "O" hopes to provide a little insight into what's going on with Lady Frog Basketball. Our format will be pretty basic, as we will have random thoughts and statements regarding a variety of topics including but not limited to: team stuff, practice, game preparation, scouting, recruiting, future schedules, player development, and, of course, FUN THINGS.
March 11, 2011 "COACH "O" LIVE AT THE MWC TOURNAMENT"
Nov. 15, 2010 "WE ARE UNDERWAY!!" The season officially tipped off for us this past Friday. It was an easy win over Houston Baptist but NOTHING will be easy from here on out. Our schedule gets tough beginning with rival SMU on Wednesday. SMU/TCU has a long history in all sports. A natural rival for many reasons. What does this really mean for women's basketball? Basically, it's a big non-conference showdown each year. We no longer share the same league. Generally both teams are good quality teams. Although we (Yes, the TCU Horned Frogs) have been much more successful the past 11 years under Coach Mittie.
Let's take a quick comparative look at the past 11 years - beginning 1999-2000
Bottom line is it's a big game for several reasons. None bigger than just to notch a W against your long time rival!
We begin a tough road stretch after the SMU game as we head to UT San Antonio (Friday) then to the U.S. Virgin Islands to face powerhouses West Virginia, Iowa State and Virginia. We will learn a lot about our team over the next several games. We have a bunch of opportunities to notch wins against high quality teams. Every win is important when it comes to NCAA selection next March. Wins again top-notch competition are even more important! Our next five opponents are all probable NCAA teams!
We host Metroplex rival SMU on Wednesday, November 17th at 6:30 p.m. We host University of Houston on Thursday, December 2nd at 6:30 p.m.
It's a great day to be a Frog! - Coach "O"
Nov. 1, 2010
The official Associated Press preseason women's basketball poll has been released. It's OFFICIALLY the toughest non-conference schedule the Frogs have ever faced. Five teams in the top 20! This will give the Frogs several great opportunities to play the best in the country!
We will play two of those great teams at home. The University of Georgia (#19) will visit Wednesday, December 22nd and the University of Oklahoma (#10) will be here January 2nd. We play rival Texas A&M in College Station this season on Sunday, December 12th. The first two of the top 20 teams we will face in successive days in the shootout in the U.S. Virgin Islands over Thanksgiving. We will take on West Virginia (#11) and Iowa State #20). We finish the trip with the University of Virginia, a perennial power from the ACC.
- We are ranked #23 in the nation in the AP preseason poll. This is just the 2nd time in school history that we are ranked in the preseason poll! We are in tremendous company!
- Thanks to all the FROG fans that attended our Fall Golf Outing on October 28th. We had a great time and we appreciate everyone's support!
- We have two scrimmages in the next 10 days. The scrimmages unfortunately are NOT open to the public due to NCAA regulations. The scrimmages will really help us prepare for our home opener on November 12th vs. Houston Baptist.
- We host Metro-Plex rival SMU on Wednesday November 17th at 6:30 p.m.
It's a great day to be a Frog! - Coach "O"
Oct. 1, 2010 "It's October!" The sports world loves to focus on "October baseball" & then perhaps college & high school football. Oh - and of course the Cowboys and the NFL! High school football is really heating up with conference/district play. The college football world locks into great conference match ups! Quietly, all of us coaches in basketball `tip-off' another season. The NCAA actually changed the starting date for women's Division I programs and as a result we begin with our first practice on Sunday October 3rd at 5 p.m. Once again, the players and coaches are excited. This year we are excited about the opportunity to `repeat' as Mt. West Conference Champions!
- Our TCU football team is again in the nation's top 5. It should be another wild ride and hopefully it ends in another BCS game!
- We are shooting for our 10th NCAA bid in 11 years! Only a small handful of schools can boast about that run!
- We are mentioned in the top 25 of two major publications (Sporting News #23, Lindy's #24).
- Once again our schedule is among the VERY BEST! We play 6 teams in the non-conference that are in the pre-season top 25! West Virginia, Iowa State, Virginia, Texas A&M, Georgia, and Oklahoma. That's not to mention SMU, Houston and Fresno State. Yes our non-con is awesome! Once again our RPI should be very good.
- Next year's schedule (2011-12) will include: @ Georgia, @ Oklahoma, NC STATE, TEXAS A&M, @ SMU, @ Houston. Our future schedules are on hold at this time awaiting word on how many conference games we will play. The Mt. West doesn't know when Fresno State & Nevada will be joining our league. It could be in time for '11-'12 or it could be '12-'13. We will keep you posted!
It's a great day to be a Frog! - Coach "O"
Aug. 9, 2010 Usually I begin my blog when we get started in the fall. Well the fall arrived early for the Frogs! We held 3 practices in July (with our retuning players) & now are in the midst of 7 additional practices with our entire team.
We leave Wednesday morning for an 8-day trip to Vancover, British Columbia, Canada. This is the first foreign trip in 8 years for our program. The new NCAA rules allow all qualified incoming players to participate. We have 4 healthy freshmen (also 3 sophomores) who will benefit greatly with the ealry practices and the game experience. The team building time will also be invaluable. We have a great opportunity & challenge that awaits our ball club. Repeating as Mt. West Conference Champions. We perhaps have much to prove this winter!
Just a couple of quick quotes to remind us all that last year was last year! It's over! Bill Parcells - "What have you done for me lately? What can you do for me NOW?!"
Briefly a note or two on each of our players.
Seniors - Four terrific seniors who are out to prove last year was the truth!
Helena - Reigning conference MVP-slighted from the Wade trophy list (pre-season list of candidates for nat'l player of the yr). Trust me we wouldn't want anyone else!! She will prove to be one of the BEST in the country! Emily - First-team all-conf a year ago, led the Frogs in scoring, continues to improve. Yes she's even better than a year ago! Rachel - Having a GREAT fall (or summer to be precise)! Ready for a big sr. yr! New offense is a great fit for her skills! Micah - New offense also fits fellow sr. She is healthy & ready to go.
Juniors - One dynamic junior! Nette - Can she continue to get tougher? Emphatically YES! Jr. point guard has taken her game up another notch! Always fun to watch!
Sophomores - Three sensational sophomores! Delissa -Part-time starter & first off the bench last yr! Just does so many things well! Starr -Runner-up freshman of the year in Mt. West! Runner-up?? Enough said! The goal is to be the BEST sophomore THIS YEAR! Hannah - Has really made bigs strides! A year's experience is making a big difference! Her game has improved in every area!
Freshmen - Four or five fabulous freshman (Well we will see! But gotta love the adjective.)! Briesha - Wing who loves to compete & is athletic! Jacq - Guard who can stoke it! Megan - Point who can shoot it & create for others! Aron - Forward who is a terrific ahtlete-very impressive early! L.T. - Will not play, injured
Red-shirt junior transfer from Iowa State Whitney Williams - Everyone will have to wait until next year (it will be worth the wait!). She is currently not allowed to play (this season) or practice (until this fall).
The FUTURE Recruiting class of 2011 - FOUR verbal comittments = FOUR happy players & FOUR happy coaches!! Some experts say all four in the nation's top 200 including two in the top 100. Only time will tell, but we are excited about the potential of this class!! More in November!
The STAFF Ebony (Shaw) Gillam replaces Sandora Irvin (playing WNBA & overseas) as Director of BB Operations. The rest of us are back for more!! AND WE are LUVIN the early start to the season!! It's wicked awesome fun!!
I will sign off until next time! DO follow our trip on FACEBOOK! Have a very blessed day!
