WACO, Texas - The No. 10 seeded TCU Western squad opened the 2012 NCEA National Championships Thursday with a 5-3 victory over No. 7 Baylor inside Extraco Coliseum.
"The Western team rode with a lot of confidence today against a great Baylor squad," said interim Western head coach Kindel Huffman. "We are very excited and ready for tomorrow."
After battling the Bears to a 2-2 draw in Reining, the Horned Frogs, now 5-9 in Western, moved to the second round by scoring a 3-1 decision in Horsemanship. With the victory, the Frogs, who scored a total of 1,089 points against Baylor, advanced to face No. 2 seeded Oklahoma State Friday at 8:30 a.m. CT.
Senior Courtney Chown led the way for the Frogs in Horsemanship as she defeated Bryn Lindley, 145-140.5. Alexie Estrada, who recently was named an honorable mention All-America honoree, also scored a point for TCU, upending Chelsea Retmier, 141-140.5. With the win, the junior is now 9-4-1 on the year. Freshman Samantha Bayer rounded out the Frog scoring in the event, downing Meghan Murphy.
In Reining, Bayer continued her impressive showing in Waco, scoring a 134-133 decision over Amber Mooney. With the victory, Bayer claimed her fifth win of the season and second on the day. Alexi Child tallied the other point for the Frogs in the event by defeating Katherine Berg, 138-131.
On the Hunt Seat side, the shorthanded Frogs came into nationals with the No. 8 seed, but dropped a 5-3 nail-biter to No. 9 Kansas State. The Purple and White, who wrapped-up their season with a 6-6-2 record, tried to make a late rally, scoring a 3-1 victory in Equitation over Fences, but came up just short after dropping a 4-0 setback in Equitation on the Flat.
Senior Victoria Lee was victorious for the Frogs in Fences, scoring a 154-153 victory over Sarah Mershon. The victory for Lee, who ended the year 4-1-0, was extra special as Mershon was recently named an All-Big 12 selection as well as an NCEA honorable mention All-American.
