TCU Western Team Defeats No. 6 Kansas State Friday Night

WACO, Texas - The No. 10 seeded TCU Western squad upended No. 6 Kansas State Friday night, 5-3, to advance to the next and final round of the 2012 NCEA National Championships. 

The Horned Frogs, who will battle for fifth-place tomorrow against No. 4 Auburn, simply dominated the Wildcats in Reining Friday night, claiming a 3-1 victory in the event inside Extraco Coliseum. In Horsemanship, the Frogs held off a late rally and battled KSU to a 2-2 draw. 

"I'm very proud of my team," said interim Western head coach Kindel Huffman. "We have worked so hard to prepare for nationals and can now see the results. Our team is really coming together at the right time."

Freshman Samantha Bayer continued her winning ways Friday night with a 136.5-135.5 victory over Jordan Cox in Reining. Kolby Simonson and Alexi Child scored the final two points for the Purple and White, downing Emily Stockford and Jesse Johnson, respectively. 

In Horsemanship, Bayer defeated Hannah Ribera, 140-139.5, while senior Courtney Chown upended Kelly Bovaird to help the Frogs advance to Saturday's final round. With the win, Bayer remained unbeaten on the week at 6-0 heading Saturday's action.

The Horned Frogs opened the day falling to No. 2 seeded Oklahoma State, 5-3. In all, the Purple and White, who outscored the Cowgirls by a score of 1,117-1,111.5, battled OSU to a 2-2 draw in Horsemanship. 

Chown and Bayer garnered the two points for the Frogs in Horsemanship. Chown, a senior from Pilot Point, dropped Lauren Halvorson, 148-144.5, while Bayer defeated Marissa Dalton, 143.5-136. Junior Alexie Estrada appeared to have scored a point for the Frogs in the event, but came up short to Mamie Tomlin, falling 143-142.5. 

Bayer, a freshman from Oregon, continued her winning ways in Reining as she scored the lone point for the Frogs in the event by defeating Rachel Houchin, 137-126.
