WACO, Texas - The No. 9 seeded TCU equestrian squad defeated Baylor 9-7 in the quarterfinals of the NCEA National Championship on Friday; the first time the Frogs have defeated the No. 1 seed at Nationals.

TCU will play the No. 5 seeded Texas A&M Aggies in the semifinals. A win against the Aggies would lead the Frogs to the championship tomorrow afternoon against the winner of Georgia and Auburn.

The Rundown
The Frogs had a speedy start against the No. 1 seed Baylor Bears, posting a 3-1 decision in Reining thanks to the work of Carley Montemuro, Brooke Boyle and Carly Lombard. Lombard's matchup with Shyanne Smith was due to be on a horse named Curtis, but Smith was granted a re-ride and the horse changed to Paddy.

In Equitation over Fences, Carley Barnett gave her all in a 151-point ride on Cody which would eventually earn her a point for TCU against Gabby Conte's 137. Molly Peddicord came into the arena determined and dropped a 158-152 decision on Vivaldi against Shannon Hogue.

Back in the Western arena, freshman Laska Anderson gave a push for the Frogs with her ride on Zip which would earn her a score of 130.5, eventually downing Aspen Crew for a Purple and White point. Megan McMullen came out poised on Chili, dropping Kaylee Mellott's 139-point ride with her own ride of 147.5 points. Rylee Morgan finished it out for the Frogs on Otto, earning the half a point TCU needed to take Horsemanship 3-0.

To round out the quarterfinals, Equitation on the Flat had the spotlight; senior Kari Hancock gave an upstanding ride worth a 172-point decision on Calvin. Hancock's point was the lone point for the Frogs in Flat, but was what the Purple and White needed to officially down the Bears with a score of 9-7 as the final.

History Made Again
Last season's NCEA National Championships brought several new records for TCU and the NCEA, and Friday's quarterfinals made history again as the Frogs defeated the No. 1 seed for the first time at Nationals. The Frogs still maintain the record of the lowest seed ever to make it to the finals in NCEA history.

Hunt Seat Coach Logan Fiorentino
"Any time you beat Baylor, it's a good day. We had a tough season against them in the regular season but we were super, super close every single game. This one was the one that we needed and the girls stepped up when it counted. As Coach P (Gary Patterson) says, `you've only got to beat them once' so it was a good day."

Head Coach and Director of Equestrian, Haley Schoolfield
"Hats off to the Western girls for just going out and being strong start to finish all day, then it coming down to all the pressure on the Flat girls and coming up big. Coming up big late in the game when they knew they had to."

- Megan McMullen, Carly Lombard, Carley Montemuro and Brooke Boyle are now 2-0 at the 2017 Championship
- McMullen topped her Horsemanship score from the meet against SMU, 142.5 to 147.5
