No. 7 TCU Upended by South Carolina at Nationals
April 19, 2013
WACO, Texas - No. 4 seeded TCU tried to rally late Friday afternoon in Western, but came up short at Extraco Coliseum, falling to No. 5 seeded South Carolina in the second round of the 2013 NCEA Championship, 5-2.
The Horned Frogs ended the year 10-5 in Western, while South Carolina improved to 10-5 with the victory. As a team, TCU closed its season with an 8-9 overall record and 3-3 mark in league play, which was good enough for second-place in the regular-season conference standings.
In Horsemanship, the Frogs battled the Gamecocks, who are coming off an SEC Championship, to a 2-2 draw, but couldn't make up the difference following a sweep by USC in Reining.
Sophomore Calli Rouse put the Frogs on the board in Horsemanship, defeating Katie Kopf, 147-142.5. Erin Gillette tallied the other point for TCU in the event, upending Sam Chiodo, 143.5-136.5. With the win, Rouse ended the season at 8-4-2 overall, while Gillette closed out her first year in the program recording a 10-5-0 record. The win for the freshman was impressive in the fact that coming into nationals Chiodo was tabbed an NCEA All-American after going 7-1 during the regular-season.
Samantha Bayer, a sophomore from Oregon, was the lone bright spot for the Frogs in Reining, riding Polly to a 138.5-138.5 draw versus Layla Choate. All-America honoree Alexi Child appeared well on her way to scoring a point for the Frogs in the event, but dropped a 136-134 setback to Amanda Pope.
