Ward Wins Again as TCU Takes Fourth
March 25, 2003
BOERNE, Texas - Sophomore D'Rae Ward became the first women's golfer since 1983 to win back-to-back individual titles, as she won the Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout on Tuesday. As a team, TCU placed fourth with a 61-over-par score of 925. The Horned Frogs, who entered the day in second place, posted a 20-over 308 to slip into fourth, behind Illinois (918), Missouri (921) and Baylor (923).
Ward fired a tourney and individual-best 67 in the opening round and led throughout the entire tournament. She finished with a 221 (+5) after scoring a 78 in the final round. Ward edged the rest of the field by one stroke to record the back-to-back feat. In the spring of 1983, TCU first-team All-American Jenny Lidback claimed the San Jose Spartan and the LSU-Fairwood in consecutive weeks.
Brooke Tull also finished among the tournament's top 10, tying for ninth with a three-day total of 229 (+13). Tull's 74 was the team's best final-round effort of the day. The senior now has placed in the top 10 in all but two tourneys so far this season.
Freshman Stephanie Godare recorded her second consecutive top-20 finish by tying for 17th at the tournament. She played the course at seven-over (79) on the final day to finish with a 243. Senior Shannon Barr tied for 39th (243) overall, while freshman Traci Robison (244) shared 41st place.
