TCU women's golf opens its spring season

PARRISH, Fla. -- The No. 36 TCU women's golf team opens its spring season Monday at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla.

The event is taking place at the River Wilderness Golf Club (par 72, 6,099 yards).

Eleven of the 14 teams in the field are ranked in the top 50 nationally by Golfweek. In addition to TCU, competing schools include Arkansas, Baylor, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Missouri, Nebraska, Northwestern, Notre Dame, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M and Tulsa.

Representing the Horned Frogs are seniors Stacey Bieber, Camille Blackerby and Catherine Matranga along with junior Carrie Morris and freshman Valentine Derrey. It is the first collegiate tournament for Derrey, a native of Paris, France.

The Central District Invitational begins a busy week for TCU. The Frogs begin competition Friday at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan.

Matranga topped the Frogs in the fall season with a 72.9 stroke average that placed second in the Mountain West Conference, behind only BYU's Rachel Newren (72.7). Matranga was a Mid-Season All-American by Golf World in addition to being named the Nation's Most Improved Player.
