Goertzen Shatters School 5K Record

March 31, 2017

STANFORD, Calif. -- Sophomore Brenley Goertzen broke the school record in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 15:51.78 at the Stanford Invitational on Friday night. Goertzen shattered the previous record (Rose Tanui, 2010) by more than 21 seconds.

In addition to her record-breaking performance, Goertzen placed second overall in a highly competitive field of distance runners in Stanford. Oregon's Samantha Nadel edged out the victory at 15:49.26, just two and a half seconds quicker than Goertzen.

Goertzen has continued to add to an impressive sophomore season. In the fall, she took home bronze at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships and earned a berth at the NCAA Championships. During the indoor season, Goertzen earned gold in the 5K and bronze in the 3K at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
