The Road To Eugene

June 5, 2017

This year’s squad made sure that the 4x100-meter relay would continue to be one of the strongest events for TCU. At the Horned Frogs Invitational, Raymond Bozmans, Emeilo Ferguson, Darrion Flowers and Jalen Miller strung together a season-best time of 39.15, which ranks 18th in the country. Freshman Jostyn Andrews filled in to anchor the relay at the NCAA West Prelims, and the team recorded an eighth-place finish en route to a spot at nationals. TCU still holds the collegiate record in the event with a time of 38.23 (1989). The men’s 4x100-meter relay will kick off the action at the NCAA Championships at 6:32 p.m. CT on Wednesday, June 7.

Jalen Miller kept the 100 meters a Horned Frog tradition throughout his junior season. Miller became the third TCU athlete in five years to bring the Big 12 crown back to Fort Worth. The Tunica, Miss., native was seeded third overall after the prelims at 10.19, and in the finals, he took advantage of a strong tailwind and edged out the victory over Texas’ Senoj-Jay Givans by three-thousandths of a second with a time of 10.03. Following his gold-medal performance at conference, Miller then clocked a time of 10.08 (w+4.0) in the first round of the NCAA West Prelims before running a 10.20 in the semifinals and moving on to the NCAA Championships with the 11th seed. The 100-meter dash semifinals are set for 7:46 p.m. CT on Wednesday, June 7.

Scotty Newton will make his third-straight appearance at Hayward Field, having earned his way to nationals every year in his collegiate history at TCU. Newton will represent the Horned Frogs in both the long jump and triple jump. At the NCAA West Prelims, the junior from Bakersfield, Calif., produced a season-best mark of 25 feet 2.5 inches (7.68 meters) in the long jump to take the 12th and final spot to Eugene. In the triple jump, Newton logged the ninth-best mark. At the Big 12 Championship, Newton took home silver in the triple jump with a wind-assisted distance of 53 feet 11 inches (16.43 meters). Newton will hit the jumping pit at 8 p.m. CT on Wednesday for the long jump, and he will return for the triple jump at 7:40 p.m. CT on Friday.

The men’s 4x400 relay secured a spot at nationals with a time of 3:06.50 for an 12th-place finish in Austin. In front of the home crowd at the Horned Frogs Invitational, Kevin McClanahan, Darrion Flowers, Jostyn Andrews and Derrick Mokaleng logged a season-best time of 3:06.00, taking home first place. The 4x400 relay will start at 9:48 p.m. CT on Wednesday.

The women’s 4x100 relay team of Kayla Heard, Sabrina Moore, Judy Emeodi and Briona Oliver saved their best effort for the perfect opportunity at the NCAA West Prelims, where they ran the third-fastest time of the meet at 44.34 for a season best and spot at nationals. The squad will run at 6:32 p.m. CT on Thursday, June 8.

Brittney Trought, a sophomore from Aledo, Texas, wasted no time in putting her name into the record book in her first season with the Frogs. Trought moved to No. 3 on TCU’s all-time list in the outdoor opener with a wind-legal time of 13.31 in the 100 hurdles. Trought went on to take home fourth place at the Big 12 Championship with a finals time of 13.05 (w+4.1). In the prelims, she logged a time of 13.16 (w+2.1). At the NCAA West Prelims, Trought qualified for the semifinals with an eighth-place finish at 13.12 before clocking a time of 13.04 (w+2.8) for a sixth-place finish and spot at nationals. Trought will compete in the 100 hurdles at 7:32 p.m. CT on Thursday, June 8.

After opening his outdoor career with a win at the TCU Invitational, freshman Ryan Camp went on to steadily improve in the discus, his main event, throughout the season. Camp peaked at the right time as he produced a season-best mark of 184 feet 7 inches (56.26 meters) when it mattered most at the NCAA West Prelims. His effort at regionals eclipsed his previous personal best by nearly 3 feet and gave him the ninth-best mark of the meet, booking a ticket to nationals. Camp will compete at 7:05 p.m. CT on Friday, June 9.
