TCU Women's Soccer Begins Season With 1-0 Loss
Aug. 30, 2002
WACO, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs (0-1-0) dropped a 1-0 decision to the Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-0-0) on Friday night in Waco. The contest, part of the annual Baylor Labor Day Classic, was the 2002 season opener for the Frogs.
The Horned Frogs and Bulldogs were deadlocked in a scoreless duel for nearly three-quarters of the match before Mississippi State grabbed a goal following a TCU miscue. After the Horned Frogs were signaled for a hand ball, Mississippi State lined up for a direct free kick, which was taken by Bulldog sophomore Jessi Moore. Moore blasted the ball past both the TCU wall and goalkeeper Ruth DeJong and into the back of the net.
It was the first career appearance in goal for DeJong, a junior. She was tested early on by a strong attacking group, making a pair of saves in the game's opening five minutes. DeJong also stopped a barrage of shots to close the first half. TCU's best opportunity of the match came in the 15th minute when senior Sherry Dick took a chance from 45 yards away. She launched a shot that went far over the head of the Bulldog goalkeeper, who was well out of the box, but the ball bounded off the crossbar.
"We did some good things tonight," TCU head coach David Rubinson said. "Ruth played a really good game in goal. She saved some tough shots. They (Mississippi State) have some good frontrunners and left us suspect to counter attacks."
The Horned Frogs started four true freshmen, as Lauren Siepiela, Elizabeth Walsh, Molly Hicks and Brianne Yeary opened the contest.
The Frogs complete their play in the Baylor Labor Day Classic on Sunday with a 4:30 p.m. match against Louisiana-Lafayette. TCU's first home match is Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 5:00 p.m. against Centenary.
