Frogs Slip Past Bulldogs at UAB Nike Classic
Sept. 7, 2001
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (September 7, 2001) -- The TCU women's soccer team handed Mississippi State their first lost of the season Friday evening, edging out the Bulldogs 3-2 in the opening game of the UAB Nike Classic at Birmingham, Alabama. TCU improved to 2-1-0 on the year, while Mississippi State fell to 2-1-0 with the loss. The loss also snapped State's four-game unbeaten streak which dated back to last season.
"TCU played very well against us tonight," said Mississippi State head coach Neil McGuire. "They stuck to their gameplan which, through persistence, created a lot of good opportunities for them. It was an end-to-end battle with each team having good opportunities."
TCU sophomore Jenny Swanson broke a scoreless deadlock nearly 13 minutes into the game when she dribbled through a pair of Bulldog defenders and found space to rifle off a 10-yard shot into the upper right corner to give the Frogs a 1-0 lead. The goal was Swanson's first of the season.
With time winding down in the first half, State evened the score when Jessi Moore headed a ball to Jessica Kauffman, finishing the pass with a header of her own over the outstretched fingers of TCU goalkeeper Shannon Wagner.
TCU junior Nicole Carman gave the Purple and White its second lead of the game 23 minutes into the second stanza on a set play, then watched as senior Ali Schloegel gave the Frogs a 3-1 lead three minutes later on an empty net goal set up by a challenge from State goalkeeper Krystal Werges. Jenny Swanson also grabbed assists on both goals to finish the game with four points.
Amber Meesey struck for State 58 seconds later on a loft over Wagner to bring MSU within one, but the Horned Frogs' relentless defense over the last 18 minutes of play preserved the win.
TCU will play Ole Miss in their final game at the UAB Nike Classic on Sunday, September 9, at 10 a.m.
