Horned Frogs Top Texas Tech In OT For Second Victory
Sept. 7, 2003
Fort Worth, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs soccer team recorded its second straight shutout as they topped the Texas Tech Red Raiders in overtime. Amy Van Zandt (Jr., Fort Worth, Texas) took a shot deep in the box that was blocked by Tech goalkeeper Megan Knauss, but Jenny Swanson (Sr., Tacoma, Wash.) was there for the rebound as she headed it into the back of the goal for the victory.
The Frogs dominated the game offensively, controlling the ball for much of the first half, but couldn't find the back of the net as the Red Raider defense closed in to take away the shots. The Raider defense frustrated the Frogs for much of the first half, playing an offside trap, taking away many scoring opportunities, as the Frogs were whistled for six offside penalties in the first half. The Frogs outshot the Red Raiders 6-0 in the half.
Van Zandt tried to get the Horned Frogs on the board late in the first half, as she took two shots, one of which was blocked by Red Raider goalkeeper Megan Knauss and the other sailed over the back of the net. In the half, Knauss faced six shots and made one save.
In the second half, the offense picked up as Tech tested Frog goalkeeper Katie Buchanan (Fr., Plano, Texas) with five shots, four on goal. Buchanan made three saves and her defense helped out heading the ball out of danger. TCU kept piling on the shots as they took seven shots at the goal, two on goal, only to see five of them go wide of the goal. The Red Raider defense helped out Knauss, making a pair of game saving saves to keep the game tied at zero.
The offsides continued to pile up for the Frogs as they were called for two more in the second. Elizabeth Walsh (So., Dallas, Texas) made a bid for the game winner late in the half, but couldn't get over the defender as it was blocked out to the middle of the field and the game remained scoreless.
The Frogs dominated the extra period, taking four shots and finally hitting paydirt in the 102nd minute when Swanson ended the game. Buchanan made all three of her saves in the second half to pick up her first shutout in her career.
With the shutout, the Red Raiders have yet to score a goal in the 2003 season.
TCU, now 2-1 on the season, will have a brief rest as they head to Dallas on Tuesday for a match-up with SMU. Game time at Westcott Field is set for 7 p.m.
