TCU Drops Heartbreaker At SMU
Sept. 10, 2003
Dallas, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs soccer team dropped a heartbreaker Tuesday night at SMU, falling to the Mustangs 4-2 at Westcott Field. The Frogs dominated most of the game, but a couple of tough goals, dashed the Frogs hope of picking up their first ever victory over SMU.
Early in the first half, the Frogs took control as Amy Van Zandt (Jr., Fort Worth, Texas) challenged SMU goalkeeper Amanda Clark, but shot the ball high. Two minutes later, Katie Buchanan got herself into the game on a tough-angle shot by Lauren Mussallem that she smothered to keep the game scoreless.
The Frogs finally capitalized in the 20th minute when Kelly Potysman (Jr., Fort Worth, Texas) and Ashley Fortune (Fr., Bothell, Wash.) hooked up. Potysman fed a pass through the crowd to Fortune, who drew the keeper out of the net and buried it, when Clark's attempt to smother it failed, giving the Frogs a 1-0 lead. Just over ten minutes later, SMU tied the game on a shot from 40 yards out that spun into the right side of the goal, snapping Buchanan's shutout streak at 170:51.
With the game tied at one after the half, the Frogs, once again dominated early in the second half, picking up their second goal of the game five minutes in. Fortune served a high pass, and Van Zandt outran her defender and buried the ball in the lower right hand corner for her first goal in a Frog uniform. Jessi Moore (Jr., Grapevine, Texas) tried to give the Frogs a two-goal lead as she found herself alone ten yards out, but saw her shot go high over the back of the goal.
The Mustangs got the equalizer 17 minutes later when Jill Heinemann connected for the second time of the night. Her shot from just outside the box curved into the lower left corner of the goal. In the 80th minute, SMU took the lead on a Kim Harvey goal, who also gave the Mustangs a late goal to account for the final score.
Buchanan made six saves in the game, but allowed all four goals in the loss. Fortune and Elizabeth Walsh (So., Dallas, Texas) each took four shots in the game.
The Horned Frogs move to 2-2 on the season with the loss. The Frogs will host the TCU Tournament this weekend, with a Friday match-up against Oklahoma beginning at 4:30 at Garvey-Rosenthal. On Sunday, TCU will square off against Baylor beginning at 1:00.
