Horned Frogs Top Cincinnati in C-USA Opener, 2-1
Sept. 19, 2003
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Amy Van Zandt had a huge night for the Horned Frogs, scoring both goals in a key victory over a Cincinnati Bearcat squad that was picked to finish at the top of the Conference USA standings this season. The victory marks the first time in women's soccer history that the Horned Frogs have opened the conference season with a win.
The Frogs got the game started off on the right foot, picking up their first goal of the game in the ninth minute. Jessi Moore and Van Zandt hooked up for the second time this season, giving the Frogs the early 1-0 lead. Van Zandt scored her team-high third goal of the season, while Moore picked up her second assist.
Cincinnati tied the game twenty minutes later as the Bearcats picked up their lone goal off of a corner kick. For the Bearcats, Becca Morris took the corner kick that deflected past Frogs goalkeeper Katie Buchanan off of defender Karissa Hill for Cincinnati's only goal of the game. Despite the own goal, Buchanan came up big in the first half for the Frogs, as she faced six shots and made four saves to keep the game tied at one heading into the half.
As was the case in the first half, TCU came out strong in the second, as Van Zandt connected for the second time of the night and her fourth of the year, eight minutes into the half. Jenny Swanson fed the ball to Van Zandt on a breakaway that Van Zandt buried in the back of the goal for the go-ahead goal.
Overall, the Bearcats outshot the Frogs 11-10, but couldn't find the back of the net. Buchanan made the only save she needed to in the second half, with the 'Cats making a push for the equalizer late in the game. On the night, Buchanan stopped five Cincinnati shots.
TCU improves to 3-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in C-USA action. The Frogs head to Chicago for a 1:00 kickoff with DePaul in another C-USA contest on Sunday at Wish Field.
