Horned Frogs Open C-USA Action With 2-1 Win Over Southern Miss
Sept. 24, 2004
Hattiesburg, Miss. - The TCU Horned Frogs put an end to a three-game losing streak on Friday afternoon as they defeated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in Conference USA action. For the second straight season, TCU opens up the C-USA portion of their schedule with a win. They defeated the Golden Eagles 2-1 behind another solid performance by senior Jessi Moore who recorded a goal and an assist.
Despite being outshot by the Golden Eagles 17-9, TCU made the most of its opportunities, burying two in the net. In her first career start, Lindsay White made three saves to help lead the Frogs to victory.
Angie Nickens opened up the scoring in the 21st minute with her first career goal. She tracked down a through ball that was delivered by Moore and blasted it into the lower corner of the goal, giving TCU the early 1-0 lead.
Twelve minutes later, the Golden Eagles tied the game on Carly Barkley's third goal of the season. Southern Miss earned two corner kicks in the half and took advantage of one to knot the score. Megan Colts took the corner kick and played it perfectly to Barkley's head as she headed it past White for the 1-1 tie.
Less than a minute later, Moore connected for what would prove to be the game winner. Following the kickoff after the Golden Eagles score, Moore blasted a shot past the unsuspecting Golden Eagle goalkeeper, Anna Snyder. The goal was the sixth of the season for Moore and matches her total from a year ago.
The teams battled the rest of the way as the defense for both squads took over. The Frogs withstood an 11-shot barrage by the Golden Eagles in the second half and White made two saves to preserve the 2-1 win.
The Frogs improve to 3-5 overall and are 1-0 in C-USA play. They will return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon as they travel to New Orleans, La. for a date with the Tulane Green Wave. Game time for the match is set for 1:00 p.m.
