Houston Soccer Shuts Out TCU In Home Finale
Nov. 1, 2002
With the annual Conference USA tournament less than a week away and the University of Houston women's soccer team's fate waiting in the balance, the Cougars pulled out a 1-0 victory over state rival TCU on Friday (Nov. 1) night in a pivotal league match at Robertson Stadium.
After a scoreless tie at the half, both teams endured a physical and defensive battle until the 54th minute.
As the Cougar offense controlled the ball and charged the goal, TCU goalie Ruth DeJong moved forward for a block, but Houston senior Ashley Fortenberry, who was honored before kick-off as the lone Cougar senior this season, kicked the ball hard enough so that it bounced over DeJong's head and into the back-right corner of the net for the score.
Houston threatened late once again with just under six minutes remaining in regulation. After a TCU foul, Fortenberry shot a free kick straight to freshman Stephanie Pucek, who headed the ball just over the net and out of bounds.
Fortenberry and freshman Kelly Golden lead the Cougars with three shots each on the night, and with all three of Fortenberry's coming on goal, she increases her team-leading total to 30 overall on the season.
With the win, Houston improves its overall season record to 8-7-2, including 4-3-2 in Conference USA play. The Cougars wrap up the regular season with the make-up game against Tulane, originally scheduled for Oct. 25, on Sunday (Nov. 3) afternoon at Westfield Facility in New Orleans, La., with kick-off slated for 12:00 p.m.
