Frogs Season Ends On Penalty Kicks
Nov. 5, 2003
Charlotte, N.C. - TCU and Tulane battled through two periods and two overtimes, but neither team could solve the other's defense and the game ended in a 0-0 tie. To decide who advanced, the teams battled it out with penalty kicks. The Green Wave knocked in three goals to the Horned Frogs one to advance to the second round of the Conference USA Postseason Tournament.
TCU dominated the first two periods of play, but couldn't capitalize on the many opportunities they had. Ashley Fortune beat the goalkeeper early in the first half, but couldn't find the angle she needed to bury the ball in the back of the net. The Frogs kept the pressure on, outshooting Tulane 4-2 in the half, forcing Green Wave goalkeeper Megan Morey to make three saves. TCU goalkeeper, Katie Buchanan made the only save of the half she needed to.
The opportunities kept coming in the second half. Twice Cara Toulouse found herself with only the goalkeeper to beat, but both shots went wide right, keeping the game scoreless. A Green Wave corner kick deflected off the crossbar and out to a waiting Wave forward, but an offsides call was made, helping the Frogs escape unscathed.
The Frogs racked up five corner kicks in the second half, but could capitalize on none of them and the game went into overtime. The shots were identical in the second half, with TCU outshooting Tulane 4-2.
In the overtime, Katie Buchanan was knocked out of the game with an injury to the right leg. Jennifer Sims came on in relief. Sims dodged a big bullet as a Green Wave player was alone in front of the net, but headed it out of bounds wide left.
The second overtime was uneventful as both teams played defense and didn't put much pressure on offensively, sending the game into penalty kicks.
After sitting out the entire game, Jessi Moore came into to take the first pk for TCU, her shot sailed high over the net. Green Wave forward Jessica Mendez buried her attempt, giving Tulane a 1-0 advantage. After a Laura Greenberg miss, Kelley Smith gave Tulane a 2-0 advantage. Jenny Swanson got the Frogs on the board with the third pk taken by TCU and Sims made the stop on Lindsay Morris' shot, leaving the score at 2-1 heading to the fourth pk. Moran Lavi's shot was knocked over the back of the goal, setting up Blair Trickey's game-winning shot. Trickey shot the ball off of Sims hands, propelling the Green Wave into the second round.
TCU wraps up their season with a 9-8-2 record overall, their first winning season since 2000.
