Spring Slate Opens Sunday At Texas Women's

Feb. 28, 2017

FORT WORTH - Soccer spring practice is well underway as the team begins preparation for the 2017 season. TCU will participate in six road matches this spring.

"I’m excited about the competition. It should be very good,” said head coach Eric Bell. "There are a lot of different teams, but they are all close by. We are very excited about the schedule. We are looking forward to seeing how we do, especially with some of the younger players. We want to see if they are able to step up and earn some more playing time as the spring goes on and into the fall.”

The slate of matches starts Sunday, March 5 when the Horned Frogs travel to Denton to take on Texas Women's University at 2 p.m. The spring matches continue Saturday, March 25 when the Frogs take on Texas A&M in College Station at 5 p.m.

Some unique challenges have faced the team this spring with the field surface renovations at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.

"We have been able to work our schedule to train in the indoor facility in the morning. That has worked out well for us. It’s a tighter space than a normal soccer field, but other than that it’s been great,” said Bell.

The schedule continues Saturday, April 1 with a pair of matches in Tulsa. The Frogs will get their first look at Big 12 soccer newcomer, Kansas State at 1:15. The day concludes with a 3 p.m. tilt against Tulsa.

TCU will travel to Houston the following weekend for a Saturday, April 8 meeting with Rice at 2 p.m. The schedule concludes April 15 at SMU.

As is the goal in every off-season, the coaching staff is looking to see growth out of its team as it shifts gears to the upcoming season.

"We want to see our mentality continue to grow,” said Bell. “We want to be as competitive as possible, but we also want to see some of the younger players step up and do some things that we’ve been doing in practice in a game situation. I think they are tired of playing each other in practice, so it’ll be good to play someone else.
