FORT WORTH, Texas - Playing its final exhibition match of the season, the TCU soccer team defeated Stephen F. Austin, 2-1, on Saturday at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium.

In what was the first game played under the lights at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium, the Horned Frogs were able to score the final two goals of the game to secure the win and springboard themselves in their regular season opener on Aug. 25 against Rice.

Stephen F. Austin was able to get on the board first as the Ladyjacks' Amanda Alders found the back of the net at the 7:17 mark of the first half.

The Ladyjacks' lead did not last long however, as less than a minute later freshman Lizzy Karoly scored off a pass from Lauren Pope to even the score at one at the 7:44 mark.

Despite TCU consistently keeping the ball on the Ladyjacks' half of the field for the majority of the first half, the score would remain tied at one for the rest of the half. On numerous occasions throughout the first half, Karoly was able to get behind Stephen F. Austin's defense, en route to tallying six shots in the first half.

"I just think it is only going to be a matter of time before Michelle Nguyen, Lizzy Karoly, (Lauren) Pope and Chelsea White get familiar enough with each other that they can control the tempo," head coach Dan Abdalla said. "They are just going to continue to get better and better as the season progresses."

The score remained even at one apiece until the 71:54 mark when a foul by Stephen F. Austin setup a direct free kick by Nguyen on the left side. Nguyen was able to bend her shot around the Ladyjacks' defensive wall and past goalie Francesca Tierno to give TCU a 2-1 lead.

From that point on, the Horned Frogs clamped down on defense and nullified the remaining attacks by the Ladyjacks.

"We had some additional opportunities in the second half, but I think we lost our legs a little bit late in the second half and we were unable to capitalize," Abdalla said. "With the girls going through two-a-days right now, it is expected that both teams would get a little fatigued at the end of the game."

The Horned Frogs outshot Stephen F. Austin 24-9 for the game. Karoly led the way with nine shots, while Nguyen tallied seven. Both Shahin Pabani and Amanda Alders had two shots to lead the Ladyjacks.

TCU opens its regular season on August 25 when Rice pays a visit to Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium for a 7 p.m. match.
